The IAANZ Difference: Training to Airline Standards
Choosing a flight school is a tricky decision. While every Air New Zealand Preferred Flight Training Organisation (PFTO) delivers high-quality training, each has its own strengths and unique culture. At the International Aviation Academy of New Zealand (IAANZ), our focus has always been on producing competent, confident leaders in the flight deck.
Your first flight may be in a small training aircraft. But if your goal is the airline flight deck, why not start learning in an airline environment?
At the International Aviation Academy of New Zealand (IAANZ), students train from the heart of Christchurch International Airport. From the early stages of training, they communicate with Air Traffic Control, operate alongside scheduled airline traffic and develop the situational awareness, decision-making and professionalism expected in commercial aviation.
Because becoming an airline pilot isn't just about learning to fly. It's about decision making and becoming a leader in the flightdeck.
Train Where the Airlines operate
IAANZ is proud to be a Preferred Flight Training Organisation for Air New Zealand, as well as Approved Flight Training organisation for Vietnam Airlines and Supplier Acceptance from VietJet Air, training Vietnamese cadets for 10 years now!
One of IAANZ's biggest advantages is our location. Students and cadets are exposed to a major international airport environment from the beginning. From the queen of the skies - the A380, A350βs - to the ubiquitous A320βs, the Air NZ turboprop fleet, various private jets and more!
That means building confidence on the radio, managing workload in controlled airspace, communicating with ATC and operating alongside commercial aircraft. These experiences develop habits that can transfer directly into professional flying. Students can even land at the same time as an A320 on our parallel grass runway!
And the training doesn't stop at Christchurch International Airport. IAANZ students fly across NZ, including different airspace and cross-country flying including the gorgeous Southern Alps. That variety develops adaptable pilots who can make sound decisions when conditions change.
More Than 90 Years of Aviation Heritage
IAANZ has been training professional pilots since 1993, backed by the aviation heritage of our parent organisation, the Canterbury Aero Club, established in 1928. For more than 30 years, IAANZ has evolved alongside professional aviation, investing in aircraft, technology, instructors and training systems to meet the needs of a changing industry. That combination of heritage and international industry relationships gives students something valuable: a flight school connected to the industry they are preparing to enter.
Training a Leader, Not Just Obtaining a Licence
Passing a flight test is only one part of becoming a professional pilot.
At IAANZ, the focus is on developing safe, competent and professional pilots / leaders who can think, communicate and make decisions effectively. Experienced instructors mentor students throughout their training, with competency and safety prioritised.
Students develop technical flying skills alongside communication, teamwork, situational awareness, workload management and decision-making. These are the skills that matter when flying becomes a career rather than simply a qualification. Our Pilot Interview Preparation course then further helps students understand what comes next, including airline recruitment, interviews, simulator assessments and professional expectations.
The goal is not simply to graduate with licences and ratings. It is to graduate ready for the next step.
Technology That Gives Students an Advantage
Modern aviation training happens both inside and outside the cockpit.
IAANZ's eAviator online learning platform allows students to prepare for class, study aviation theory in an interactive way, test their knowledge and revise at their own pace.
FlightLogger and other digital systems support the training journey with lesson information, training requirements and instructor feedback, while our simulators and procedure trainers provide opportunities to practise procedures and build confidence in a controlled environment.
This blended approach means students can arrive at practical training better prepared and spend valuable time applying knowledge rather than simply receiving it.
Supporting Students Through the Journey
Deciding which career path you want to take, or moving to Christchurch to become a pilot is a major step. IAANZ has extensive experience supporting students academically and personally as they adjust to a new city or new lifestyle and a demanding training programme and life in aviation.
But there is another important part of the IAANZ experience: the people. Students train alongside others who share the same ambition, creating a strong sense of community and friendships that often extend well beyond flight school. Students may also taken on leadership roles like becoming a student rep.

Your Aviation Career Starts Here
The aviation industry will continue to evolve, but the qualities it needs from professional pilots remain constant: safety, competence, adaptability, professionalism and sound decision-making.
IAANZ brings together the environment, people, technology and industry connections to help students and cadets develop those qualities.
With more than 30 years of professional pilot training and more than 90 years of aviation heritage through the Canterbury Aero Club, IAANZ offers more than a place to learn to fly.
You can learn to fly anywhere. At IAANZ, you learn to operate and lead.
That's the IAANZ difference.
